The entire court report can be accessed with your membership login at www.prepvolleyball.com.

"PVA 18s won their third consecutive Happy Volley championship last weekend in State College, Pennsylvania.

The 18s played Saturday and Sunday without star Mariah Henley due to prom but cruised into the Gold Bracket on the strength of great serving by defensive players Julie Joyce and Brittany Stambaugh and efficient attacking by middles Rhiannon Fiala and Katrina Pisch.

On Monday, PVA took the final from Columbia 17s led by high flying Liz Brown and ultra-competitive setter Casey Giovanazzi. Columbia hung tight in Game 1 but had no answer for right sider Lauren Mobley, who scored at will from both sides of the court. A late Fiala block and Mobley kill down the line sealed Game 1, 25-23.

In game 2 it was Ashley Morgan early splitting the Columbia block and Pisch and Fiala late. Fiala has chosen to forgo college volleyball to major in engineering at Penn State and will start school before Nationals so this was her last match. And though it took her three swings, she put away match point, ending her club career with a kill and a tournament win.

Without the services of stud outside Sarah Brady, PVA 17s shuffled its line up, resulting in an undefeated weekend at the Happy Volley tourney in Pennsylvania until a heart-breaking three-game loss to a crafty Revolution 18s team in the quarterfinals of the 18s division.

With Russ Rose eying future PSU defender, Revolution's Maggie Harding, PVA’s Julie Harvey, a junior middle, put on a show in Game 1, scoring at will. "Rev" pulled away to win, 25-20, but PVA took the second, 26-24, and rode Harvey and a strong serving game to an 8-3 lead at the change in Game 3.

Two months earlier, Revolution bested PVA 17s in three and this day would prove no different. Led by the service attack of Juanita College-bound Rachelle Wiegand and a key solo block by Colleen Black (St. Francis University), the momentum swung back to Revolution, which never looked back, winning Game 3, 15-12.

Middles Harvey, Jenn Whalen and Katie Schock provided steady offense PVA’s team all weekend. With improving ball control and depth (and the return of Brady), this team's offensive capabilities could leave at mark a AAU/JVA Nationals in a few weeks.

PVA, from Philly, took the Happy Volley Cup with gold finishes by the 16s, who played without a setter; and the 14s, who finished third."

GO PVA!!

PVA on PrepVolleyball.com's "Court Report"

PVA teams and players are part of the May 21st "Court Report" on Prepvolleyball.com.

"PVA had a great weekend at KRVA regionals and the Bid Tournament. In the three years since Josh Steinbach became the club’s director, PVA had no won a head to head matchup of top teams with region powerhouse Synergy. Last weekend, PVA beat Synergy in four age groups.

PVA qualified 3 teams for Junior Nationals, including the 18s, who were considered the underdog to Synergy going into the bid tournament. Synergy, which features Tori Hampsher (Virginia Tech), Casey Read (Marquette), Rachel Depagnier (Cornell), Emily Carlin (Radford) and Marika Desanctis (Temple), defeated PVA Saturday in three sets in the region semifinals. Read and Carlin dominated at the pins and Synergy slowed PVA middle Katrina Pisch enough to pull out the win.

The teams met again one day later in the finals of the KRVA Bid Tournament. By reaching the championship match, both teams guaranteed themselves a trip to Reno for Junior Nationals. The only question was which division they would play in.

Both teams were missing their head coaches when the match got underway. Steinbach, the Villanova head coach, could not be on the bench for PVA because of the NCAA Quiet Period. Synergy coach Missy McLindon was coaching the 13s, who were playing in their own final, also against PVA.

Synergy ahead early in Game 1 and never looked back, winning 25-20. Game 2 was all PVA. Coach Bob Herrman moved Lauren Mobley to the left for PVA and put Swarthmore-bound Maggie Duszyk in on the right. Mobley provided the pop on the left opposite Mariah Henley in her normal hitting role as PVA took the 25-17 win.

Game 3 was 9-7 Synergy when DS Julie Joyce took to the service line. Three aces and a Henley kill helped push PVA to a 13-9 lead. When Mobley ripped one off the block for match point, the celebration for PVA was on.

PVA’s 16s team won the regional tournament on Saturday, led by outside hitters Kasey Cannon and Brooke Morris. Victoria Hammarskjold, a 6-0 setter in her first event as the team’s full time 5-1 setter, was excellent. She is two weeks back into playing after missing six weeks with mono and was the difference as PVA defeated Synergy in the semifinals and Pittsburgh Three Rivers in the Final. Megan Kaminski and Stephanie Kruzynski also had great days for PVA, which lost in the quarterfinals in the Bid Tournament the next day.

PVA 17s team did not compete for a bid to Junior Nationals. But led by Sarah Brady, the 17s reached the regional semifinals on Saturday before losing to eventual Bid winner Mizuno Yorktowne. The quarterfinal match against Valley Forge was an epic struggle, with PVA pulling out a 34-32 victory in Game 2 to seal the match. PVA was playing without emotional leader and libero Carly Steffes due to prom, but Haley Mork, who has shared the libero jersey, was spectacular on defense, allowing Brady to hit over around and through the Forge block."

The entire article is available to PrepVolleyball members at http://prepvolleyball.com/content/view/2574/381/

GO PVA!!

PVA 14s Win KRVA Bid Tournament!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_R-KGe1GhavA/S_F51oVWmqI/AAAAAAAAAIA/nMTGOVBBhbI/s200/PVA14s_BidChamps.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472288984498870946" />
Congratulations to the PVA 14s team. They had a tough day, but had some learning experiences and will be better prepared for DC.

PVA sent 5 teams to compete in the first of 4 of the MAPL (Mid-Atlantic Power League) events this season - the first event was held this past weekend in Raleigh, NC. Despite mass (and premature) cancellation of flights last Friday by airlines, the teams spent Thursday night successfully re-arranging travel plans...and all 5 teams made it!

The PVA 18s had a fantastic weekend (6-1) to finish 2nd overall in the event. They had their first loss of the season in the finals to a powerful Triangle 18 Black team. Check out the PVA18s in part of PrepVolleyball.com's Saturday MAPL Report!

The PVA 17s and North 17s went head-to-head at the end of Saturday, with the 17s coming out on top.

The PVA 17s, undermanned but not outgunned, went 5-1 for the weekend with the help of tough serves and in-system passing. Their last match became a forfeit as alterred travel plans due to the snow had families leaving town.

The PVA 16s worked hard on defense and kept teams out of system with tough serves. They stepped up and held their own against competitive 17s & 18s teams, including a 3 set game against NC Elite 17s in their backets' quarterfinals.

The PVA 15s showed continued improvement and promise as they competed over the weekend, finishing in the copper bracket of the 16-14s division.

Way to Go PVA!

College Commitments!

PVA Congratulates the following seniors on their college commitments:

Brittany Stambaugh -- St. Francis Univ. Despite missing 2 players, they swept their pool and then lost a tough match against Valley Forge in the semi-finals to finish tied for 3rd overall.

The 18s will finish their 2009 season (and club volleyball careers) at the Happy Volley Championships over Memorial Day weekend in State College, PA.

Go PVA 18s!

PVA 17s Bid Report

PVA 17s competed in the KRVA Bid Tournament on May 2nd & 3rd in Williamsport, PA. The weekend got a rocky start, most likely due to a new rotation because of injuries, but Sunday ended on a high note. "The girls really came together as a team and played awesome," reports Coach Kara. "I was so proud of them for rising to the challenge and working hard." The team reached the semi-finals of the Silver bracket and finished tied for 9th overall in a tough field of teams.

PVA 15 Navy competed in the KRVA Open Regional Championships on May 10th at Penn State University with Assistant Coach Kim taking over the reigns. The travel tournament was a fun and challenging experience, starting with an impromtu round of musical chairs during the PVA Social on Friday night. The 14s played in the "dome" along with the 17s & 18s, so it was fun to be able to watch the older girls play. The girls played a lot of volleyball and had some great moments! After 2 days of volleyball, they advanced to the semi-finals of the silver division and finished tied for 7th overall against a lot of strong competition. PVA is proud of the team's effort and enthusiasm! We especially liked what Coach Joann calls the "matrix move" they do together whenever they make a kill (see photo with this article).

The 14s play their last event of the 2009 season at the Happy Volley Championships over Memorial Day weekend in State College, PA.

Go PVA 14s!

Justine McNulty commits to DeSales!

PVA congratulates Justine McNulty on her decision to continue her volleyball career at DeSales University! The above photo is off the 15 White team at the NEQ.

The younger teams played in the first weekend. The 14s had their first national qualifier experience and finished tied for 40th in the 14 club division. 15 Navy tied for 39th and 15 White tied for 53rd in the 15 club division. Many of the PVA players made the holiday weekend a family event and took advantage of the opportunity to enjoy time with their families in the gym and off the court.

The older teams played in the second weekend of competition. The 17s braved the open division and by the luck of the draw ended up in arguably the toughest first-day pool of the division. They hung in there and finished the weekend in 26th place.

The 18s teams had a great weekend and were one win short of earning a bid in the club division. They finished tied for 5th place.

The PVA teams all play next in the KRVA Bid Tournament in Williamsport this weekend, May 2 & 3.

GO PVA!

Kassi Wirth commits to St. Peters!

PVA congratulates Kassi Wirth on her commitment to play volleyball at St. Peter's College. Despite the near-record low temps outside, the competition on the courts was pretty intense! We hosted 28 teams along with their family members. We also had college coaches attending from at least 68 different colleges. A full list of tournament results as well as a list of college coaches in attendance can be found at the PVA Invitational website. The success of this tournament occurred in no small part because of the many contributions of PVA's families and coaches. Again, thank you!

PVA is proud to report that our 18s team finished 8th and our 17s team finished 4th.
